Mini Cast iron Salt & Pepper Cauldrons
These tiny potjie cauldrons are modified to serve as salt and pepper shakers – particularly suitable for Samhain use, but fun and useful throughout the year. The cast-iron pair are modeled after the spherical ribbed belly and three sturdy legs of the traditional potjie, but their lids have been modified: each lid is fused to the pot and drilled with four shaker holes around its central handle. One of the pair, of course, is labeled in raised letters “salt,” the other “pepper.”
The hefty shakers measure approx. 3.25 inches high and 2.5 inches wide. Each holds approx. 5 ounces of salt or pepper. Their combined weight is a approx 1.6 pounds. Arched handles run from the opposite sides of the lids and make for easy one-handed carrying.
A potjie (pronounced “poikey”) is a time-tested form of cooking pot that has been used throughout Europe and Africa since at least the 1600s, and possibly as far back as the Iron Age. Their design exemplifies the unsung mechanical genius of ancient crafters: the deep, round bottom ensures a good rolling boil that cooks well and prevents food from sticking, while the three legs provide maximal stability, and the wide-mouthed shape allows versatility in outdoor cooking. Each potjie pot is equipped with a sturdy handle for lifting and a well-fitted lid. Cook in your potjie over an open fire or a gas burner, or pile hot coals on the deep, commodious lid to make an efficient Dutch oven.
