A simple, beautiful example of cast-iron work, this conveniently sized potjie cooks over a gallon of contents with another age's well-crafted expertise. The deeply rounded body of the cauldron is ribbed with raised lines. A lid with a handle is well-fitted into the round mouth.

The pot is perfectly proportioned at 10 inches wide and 10 inches high, including three stable legs high enough to stand the bottom conveniently over a cheerfully burning fire. It holds a generous 5 quarts – soup for the whole camping group or enough herbs for a sizable burnt offering indeed – and its 20-pound weight can be hefted using the substantial free-moving arched handle.

A potjie (pronounced “poikey”) is a time-tested form of cooking pot that has been used throughout Europe and Africa since at least the 1600s, and possibly as far back as the Iron Age. Their design exemplifies the unsung mechanical genius of ancient crafters: the deep, round bottom ensures a good rolling boil that cooks well and prevents food from sticking, while the three legs provide maximal stability, and the wide-mouthed shape allows versatility in outdoor cooking.
